A direct numerical simulation of Faraday waves displays long-time dynamics, characterized by the alternation of patterns we call quasi-hexagons and beaded stripes. The symmetries and Fourier spectra of these patterns are analyzed. An interpretation of this exotic regime as a heteroclinic cycle is proposed.

Flower Mandalas by David Bookbinder

My choice of the hexagram (the Star of David, “beloved” in Hebrew) as the organizing shape for these mandalas was subconscious. In many traditions, the Star of David, composed of two overlapping triangles, represents the reconciliation of opposites male/female, fire/water, and so on. Their combination symbolizes unity and harmony.
